چکیده
Piscine orthoreovirus genotype 1 (PRV-1) is a common virus in farmed and wild salmon the northeastern Pacific Ocean. Its regional occurrence freshwater far less clear. From 2019 to 2021, tissues of 5619 juvenile anadromous (primarily Atlantic, Chinook, coho) sampled from 12 commercial 27 enhancement British Columbia hatcheries during 83 sampling events were screened for PRV-1 prior seawater entry. More than 2200 (∼40%) also using Pan-PRV assay targeting all known PRV genotypes. was detected four coho at two facilities one Chinook facility. Partial (S1 segment) genome sequencing identified detections be subgenotype endemic Pacific. not (5611 individuals; 99.9%) or test results inconclusive (3 0.05%) remaining samples PRV-1. PRV-2 PRV-3 assay. It concluded that contribute minimally prevalence persistence Pacific, these appear have contracted participated distribution nonendemic forms recent years.

Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) infects Atlantic salmon erythrocytes
Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) belongs to the Reoviridae family and is the only known fish virus related to the Orthoreovirus genus. The virus is the causative agent of heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI), an emerging disease in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). PRV is ubiquitous in farmed Atlantic salmon and high loads of PRV in the heart are consistent findings in HSMI. The mech...
متن کاملPiscine orthoreovirus (PRV) replicates in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) erythrocytes ex vivo
Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) is a reovirus that has predominantly been detected in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). PRV is associated with heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) in farmed Atlantic salmon, and recently erythrocytes were identified as major target cells. The study of PRV replication and pathogenesis of the infection has been impeded by the inability to propagate PRV in vit...
متن کاملPiscine orthoreovirus (PRV) in red and melanised foci in white muscle of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
Melanised focal changes (black spots) are common findings in the white skeletal muscle of seawater-farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Fillets with melanised focal changes are considered as lower quality and cause large economic losses. It has been suggested that red focal changes (red spots) precede the melanised focal changes. In the present work, we examined different populations of captiv...
متن کاملThe effect of exposure to farmed salmon on piscine orthoreovirus infection and fitness in wild Pacific salmon in British Columbia, Canada
The disease Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI) is causing substantial economic losses to the Norwegian salmon farming industry where the causative agent, piscine orthoreovirus (PRV), is reportedly spreading from farmed to wild Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) with as yet undetermined impacts. To assess if PRV infection is epidemiologically linked between wild and farmed salmon in the ea...
متن کاملOccurrence of salmonid alphavirus (SAV) and piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) infections in wild sea trout Salmo trutta in Norway.
Viral diseases represent a serious problem in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) farming in Norway. Pancreas disease (PD) caused by salmonid alphavirus (SAV) and heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) caused by piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) are among the most frequently diagnosed viral diseases in recent years. The possible spread of viruses from salmon farms to wild fish is a major public c...
